Typography has become a very common part of the artwork, all around, these days. It adds more dimension and attractiveness to the text by playing with a variety of fonts and colors. But, often it becomes tough to create letters and alphabets in Illustrator due to complex designs and lack of skill. In my career, I’ve faced a lot of problems in creating letters and numbers in Adobe Illustrator.

But, in this story, I’ve come up to share 5 tips for creating a perfect piece of typography for your logo and graphic designs. These tips have also helped me in creating nice fonts and letters.

Tip #1 Curve Handle Alignment

You’ve seen that shapes often have vertically or horizontally straight edges and curves. But, the problem with irregular shapes is that they might have unaligned curves. So, to prevent this problem I suggest making aligned curves while drawing shapes. You can also turn on Smart Guides for convenience or press the Shift key while moving the curve handle. That will align it to the nearest grid.

Tip #2 Keeping Reference

When recreating complex fonts and texts, try to have a reference such as an image or a textbox. Keeping a reference allows setting grids and curve handles according to the text and results in good and similar types of graphics. You can set an image as a template through the following steps :

  1. Place an image into your opened document using File > Place or use the shortcut Shift + Ctrl + P.
  2. Add a new layer and move the image into this newly created layer.
  3. Lock the layer and create your artwork in the previous layer.

Tip #3 Using Custom Grids

Custom Grids also help in the alignment of curve handles. The steps to do this are :

  1. Enable Rulers.
  2. Drag the vertical and horizontal grids from the rulers towards the references and create a grid according to the references.
  3. Use this grid to move curve handles.
